Mereka menjawab, "Dahulu kami tidak termasuk orang-orang yang me-laksanakan shalat, وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ الۡمِسۡكِيۡنَۙ‏ Wa lam naku nut'imul miskiin 44. dan kami juga tidak memberi makan orang miskin, وَكُنَّا نَخُوۡضُ مَعَ الۡخَـآٮِٕضِيۡنَۙ Wa kunnaa nakhuudu ma'al khaaa'idiin 45. bahkan kami biasa berbincang untuk tujuan yang batil, bersama orang-orang yang membicarakannya, وَ كُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ الدِّيۡنِۙ‏ Wa kunnaa nukazzibu bi yawmid Diin 46. dan kami mendustakan hari pembalasan, حَتّٰٓى اَتٰٮنَا الۡيَقِيۡنُؕ Hattaaa ataanal yaqiin 47. sampai datang kepada kami kematian." فَمَا تَنۡفَعُهُمۡ شَفَاعَةُ الشّٰفِعِيۡنَؕ‏ Famaa tanfa'uhum shafaa'atush shaafi'iin 48. Maka tidak berguna lagi bagi mereka syafaat pertolongan dari orang-orang yang memberikan syafaat. فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ التَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِيۡنَۙ‏ Famaa lahum 'anittazkirati mu'ridiin 49. Lalu mengapa mereka orang-orang kafir berpaling dari peringatan Allah? كَاَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٌ مُّسۡتَنۡفِرَةٌ Ka annahum humurum mustanfirah 50. seakan-akan mereka keledai liar yang lari terkejut, فَرَّتۡ مِنۡ قَسۡوَرَةٍ Farrat min qaswarah 51. lari dari singa. بَلۡ يُرِيۡدُ كُلُّ امۡرِىٴٍ مِّنۡهُمۡ اَنۡ يُّؤۡتٰى صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً Bal yuriidu kullum ri'im minhum any yu'taa suhufam munashsharah 52. Bahkan setiap orang dari mereka ingin agar diberikan kepadanya lembaran-lembaran kitab yang terbuka. كَلَّا ‌ؕ بَلۡ لَّا يَخَافُوۡنَ الۡاٰخِرَةَ Kallaa bal laa yakhaafuunal aakhirah 53. Tidak! Sebenarnya mereka tidak takut kepada akhirat. كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهٗ تَذۡكِرَةٌ‌ Kallaaa innahuu tazkirah 54. Tidak! Sesungguhnya Al-Qur'an itu benar-benar suatu peringatan. فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَكَرَهٗ Fa man shaaa'a zakarah 55. Maka barangsiapa menghendaki, tentu dia mengambil pelajaran darinya. وَمَا يَذۡكُرُوۡنَ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ يَّشَآءَ اللّٰهُ‌ ؕ هُوَ اَهۡلُ التَّقۡوٰى وَاَهۡلُ الۡمَغۡفِرَةِ Wa maa yazkuruuna illaaa any yashaaa'al laah; Huwa ahlut taqwaa wa ahlul maghfirah 56. Dan mereka tidak akan mengambil pelajaran darinya Al-Qur'an kecuali jika Allah menghendakinya. Dialah Tuhan yang patut kita bertakwa kepada-Nya dan yang berhak memberi ampunan.
